Full Sun Plants

Certain plants need some sun to bloom but not too much! If you’re gardening in a yard that escapes the afternoon sun, you’ve got some great options. The Bloom-a-Thon Azalea is a newer variety of Azalea that blooms in the spring and again in the fall. Make sure you plant them a little high and add a lot of peat moss to the soil. Love the look of Hydrangeas? Try a re-bloomer like Endless Summer, or the colorful Cityline Paris Hydrangeas. For evergreens, we suggest the Mountain Fire Pieris Japonica. It blooms delicate white flowers in the spring and bright red in the leaves of new growth.

Aster

As your summer garden starts to fade your bright colored daisy-like aster plant is in full bloom and will remain through Fall. Depending on variety and location you can have your Aster grow as short as 8" and as tall as 8 feet. Asters are often a purple variety.

Bath’s Pink Dianthus

In mid to late spring, single flowers are produced on wiry stems up to 10” tall above the foliage. Each 1” star-like flower is a bright but soft pink with fringed edges and a red band surrounding the white throat. The plant is generally completely covered with flowers, remaining in bloom for several weeks.

Bee Balm

Bee balms are sun loving-flowering bush-like plants that are a part of the mint family which brings fragrance and attracts bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. Bee balms have a very fragrant foliage and come in many different shades of red, purple, white and pinks.

Big Blue Liriope

Big Blue Liriope is an evergreen perennial grown for its attractive foliage. This beautiful flowering ground cover blooms in late summer and is favored for its ability to thrive in dry shady areas.

Blanket Flower

These narrow leaves and long stems are perfect cut flowers to bring into your home. They come in shades of yellow, bronze and scarlet and often have a purple base. Blanketflower (Gaillardia Aristata) is native to North America and is in the Aster family.

Butterfly Bush

If your landscape tends to all bloom in the Spring, add a Butterfly Bush. Not only does it attract beautiful visitors in butterfly’s and honey bees, but it blooms throughout the summer into the fall, being one of the longest blooming shrubs you’ll find. Colors come in pink, purple, red, white and yellow varieties.

Catmint

If you're a cat lover and want to be the hit of the neighborhood, this erect plant with small white flowers puts off a minty odor emitted from its leaves and stems. Commonly grown in the garden, catnip is an herb, from the mint family and is often used to dry and place in cat toys.

Chrysanthemums

Chrysanthemums are beautiful golden flowers that produce a variety of flowers and will grow according to the space allowed. Often blooming in Fall, Chrysanthemums, also known as mums, are often potted and used for their boost of color in the fall.

Coneflower

Native to the eastern United States. The Coneflower is an upright flowering plant that is a part of the daisy family. They are fast growing, hardy, long-blooming and can grow 1 to 4 feet in height. They come in a variety of colors (green, orange, pink, purple, red, white, yellow) and are accompanied by dark green foliage. Attracts birds, bees and butterflies.

Coral Bells

If you need a pop of color that is reliable and will take up some room, consider a Coral Bell. Coral Bells can also thrive on a shady boarder and be a great addition to your containers. You don’t have to rely on the flower for the color, the foliage comes in a variety of colors as well.

Coreopsis

If you're needing summer color that is low maintenance with multiple blooms, consider the coreopsis. Known as tickseed, this plant develops mass quantities of yellow, orange, rose, lavender, white and bi-colored flowers in early summer. Drought tolerant and attracts butterflies.

Crapemyrtle

Bountiful cherry-red flowers from summer through fall amongst rich green leaves give you long lasting color in a shrub that offers size to your landscape.

Daisy

There are many different varieties of daisies, with blue, pink, purple, red and white varieties. Most common is white in color with a yellow center. Daisies attract butterflies and have a ‘wildflower’ appearance. They are great for splashes of color, are edible, medicinal and provide nectar for bees to make honey.

Daylily

Daylilies are very attractive flowers that landscapers and gardening enthusiasts incorporate often due to their hardiness, ease of maintenance and are typically disease and pest-free. Daylilies get their name due to their flower opening in the early morning and dying by night; leaving room for another stalks flower to follow. Though their blooms are short lived, the plant grows quickly and is long lived, continuing to offer vibrancy to any garden or landscape. Daylilies come in a variety of colors.

Densi Yew

A great bush for shaping, hedging, screen or border. It can be tall and slender or short and round, whatever your garden needs. This dark evergreen is dense spreading and can be used as your garden and landscape needs it. The Densi Yew is a staple in any landscaping project.

Diamonds Blue Delphinium

Elderberry

The common elderberry is a deciduous shrub with bright white flowers and small, dark berries. Flamenco Red Hot Poker

Flamenco plants will flower the first year even though a perennial to zone 5. The flower spikes contain tubular blooms that are attractive to hummingbirds. The mature plants may grow three feet tall.

Fraser’s Photinia

Fraser’s Photinia is a large, evergreen shrub or small tree that blooms in mid-spring. New foliage is a colorful reddish-bronze, and reddish buds are visible most of the year. Produces red foliage that later turns dark green and will grow white flowers in the spring.

Golden Variegated Japanese Sweet Flag

Excellent for brightening the edges of ponds or water gardens. Richly colored, golden yellow, grass-like leaves provide colorful accents, even in lightly shaded areas. Slowly naturalizes by spreading roots. Crushed foliage emits a delightful scent. Semi-evergreen.

Hameln Dwarf Fountain Grass

Hellebore / Lenten Rose

Ice Plant

Looking for a drought tolerant but lovely flower to fill in a troublesome dry area in your garden? You may want to try planting ice plants. Ice plant flowers add a bright splash of color to the drier parts of your garden and ice plant care is easy. The hardy ice plant is a succulent, perennial ground cover with daisy-like flowers. The ice plant is not called an ice plant because it is cold hardy, but rather because the flowers and leaves seem to shimmer as though covered in frost or ice crystals.

Karl Foerster Feather Reed Grass

Lavender Falls Wisteria

Wisteria is a genus of deciduous vines whose lovely, fragrant flowers and almost overwhelming vigor make them useful in a wide variety of settings. Plants grow rapidly and completely bury any structure they are allowed to annex. This rampant growth is easily controlled (and flowering is encouraged) by regular pruning.

Lilac

If you enjoy an intense spring bloom, have a large space to fill and want the fragrance of a floral shop, consider a lilac bush. They can grow with little care and can bring beauty (or privacy) to unsightly areas.

Little Spire Russian Sage

Lord Snowden Big Bluestem

Maiden Grass

Mohave Pyracantha Espalier

Nandina

Nandina is a species of flowering plant native to eastern Asia from the Himalayas to Japan. Ninebark

Ninebark are deciduous shrubs with alternately arranged leaves. The leaves are palmate with 3 to 7 lobes and often toothed edges. The common name ninebark refers to the peeling bark of mature branches, which comes away in strips.

Pampas Grass

Roses

Offering unparalleled beauty is the rose family. Some less maintenance than others, we tend to recommend the Knock Out Rose variety that gives you your vibrant color, needs very little pruning (often once in the Spring) and are great to mix in amongst your shrubs and perennials in your mixed beds.

Rudbeckia

Russian Sage

Shoal Creek Chaste Tree

Spirea

Spireas are among the easiest flowering shrubs to grow. These attractive shrubs are fast growing and should be grown in full sun for best flowering. They can, however, tolerate partial shade.
